Beginner’s 5S Guide Overview

About This Guide

This suite of free introductory material is designed to assist people that are new to the 5S methodology. The information in this guide provides the necessary basics for learning what is required to achieve a good understanding of 5S and how to use the methodology’s essential elements.

This guide will not expand to be a substitute for what is offered by consultants for a full and proper implementation of 5S in an industrial environment. It will also not replace the comprehensive courses that are necessary and available to train people to implement and manage the on going nature of 5S procedures.

 

Content of This Guide

This guide:

  • Defines 5S
  • Provides an overview of the historial developments that lead to 5S
  • Explains why 5S is necessary
  • Provides detailed information about each of the 5S steps or Pillars as they are known
  • How 5S is used for waste management

 

Navigating This Guide

This guide has been kept simple to navigate. The header, the menu options down the right side and any links are always displayed and can be selected at any time. Click the menu and sub-menu options to select the pages required and to move around the guide.

There are some links in the body of pages to assist ease of use, but in line with keeping the navigation of the Guide as simple as possible, the links are kept to a minumum.

All information is displayed in the centre of the web page. It is necessary to scroll some pages to view all the content and some of the links.

The date for the last time the guide was revised is constantly displayed in the bottom right corner of the footer. This allows regular visitors to the guide to establish quickly if there have been any changes or additions since their last visit.
