Computers in the workplace are a key tool that you must understand and be able to use. It is important that you are familiar with the purpose and limitations of the computer systems in your workplace.

However, unlike a tool, such as a spanner, where its purpose is obvious before you even pick it up, the monitor of a PC or a network terminal will not tell you what is does or what it is for unless you know how to make it tell you. It is important to have some form of instruction before attempting to use office systems.
Although most people now have some level of experience with using PCs, they are not necessarily familiar with all the applications to which a particular PC may be used or have access to on a network. In the business environment you should only use those functions that you are authorised to use.
In most companies, if you have a need to use a particular application, you can request training and access.
